Tips on Fly Fishing

There are thousands of live-bait anglers, who are excellent sportsmen, but the fly fisherman can practice better conservation from the beginning.

Basically, fly fishing is not only one of the fastest growing sports; it is one of the foremost forms of conserving natural resources as well as providing aquatic recreation.

Fly fishing is, very simple when three things are right: you must have a suitable rod; you must get a line to match it; and you must learn correct casting technique.

For people who wish to know some tips on fly fishing, here is a list of some pointers that could help anglers harness their fly fishing skills:

1. Material of the rod

For one of moderate means, and especially for the beginners, hollow glass is advised since it will require less care than bamboo and will not take a set if improperly handled or stored.

2. Line

Your fly casting skill will not progress with a mismatched rod and line. About 99 times in 100, the troubled fly caster has a line much too light to bring out the action of his rod.

That is why it is important to know that on any given rod, the fly fisherman should use the same size line for anything from small trout and bluegills up to the largest sea fish.

In choosing the size line, anglers should get a C level, an HCH double-taper, or a GBF three-diameter. This choice is based on the fact that a high percentage of fly rods bought nowadays are hollow glass, and that a great majority of these works best with lines of those sizes, almost regardless of lengths or weights.

3. The correct casting technique

In casting, it is important to get about 20 feet of line out front. Anglers should always remember to cast a straight line. Avoid jerky movements even if it is on a faster mode in order to do so.

Best of all, the angler should be relaxed because taunt muscles will ruin his casting.

Boiled down, there should be no reason why you should not learn the fundamental principles just as easily as those who now enjoy fly fishing.

Probably, the best and surest way to learn to cast successfully is to spend a day on the stream with some fisherman who is a competent caster.

Lessons learned on the stream are the best tips you can acquire anywhere in your quest for learning fly fishing.

Sea Fishing Tackle – Storage Solutions for Live Bait

Keeping bait alive is a challenge in itself. If trying to catch a fish is enough you got to keep your bait alive and in tip top condition too! There are ways to help keep you bait alive. I will go through the basics of some of the most popular baits used and how you can keep it alive with the minimum of casualty’s and fuss.

Sandeels

Live Sandeel is probably the deadliest bait known to sea angling in British waters, presented as a freelined bait, fished under a float or legered on a long leader, they will catch just about all of our major sporting species including Bass. There are two factors in keeping sand eel alive for any period of time. One is oxygenation and two is Temperature. Sandeels sitting in stagnant water all day is doomed and is not going to last you more than 1 hour. You need to provide fresh supply’s of oxygen via a bait air pump and a suitable container to keep them out of the sun. Water in small quantities left in the summer heat can quickly rise cooking you Sandeels. A good solution to this is a bait bucket, I highly recommend the Salt Bucket by Shakespeare not only it comes with a built in pouch for your pump but it also has a zip up lid to stop your eels jumping out and to keep the sun exposure from heating your water. If that’s not all, you are also able to collapse it and wash it out with ease.

If you want to store Sandeels for any long period of time, you need to set up a tank at home which you have had cycling for at least 4 weeks. Cycling meaning allowing the tank to go through the nitrogen cycle. When there are no traces of Ammonia left by using a saltwater test kit at your local aquatic center it is then safe to introduce you eels. This cycling process is exactly the same as if you where setting up tropical or marine fish tank.

Fitted to your tank you will need a filter pump that can circulate you tanks volume by at least 4 times an hour as a rule and some suitable saltwater rocks for the bacteria to colonise. Also you will need an air pump connected to an air stone running 24/7 this is beneficial to your Sandeels and the bacteria in your setup. Remember to change 25% of your sea water every 2 weeks, this stops the build up of Nitrates which will kill your Sandeels.

A good food for your Sandeels is Live Plankton cultures which you can buy live from all good marine aquatic shops. If not Mysis is very good too! Any eels that do die freeze down in packs and use when you wish do not allow dead Sandeels to float around your tank as this will kill off the live ones.

Peeler Crab

You can keep peelers for long periods of time by using the same method above. However most of us will place the peeler crabs in an Ice Cream tub and cover with seaweed and place into the fridge until ready to use. A great way of storing them when fishing is to place them into a bait cool bag damp! this will keep them out of the sun and elements until ready to use. Anyfish Anywhere Bait bag is a good recommended sized bag for the job. If you need to bring your crabs on further into the peeling stage bring them out of the fridge and allow them to warm up to room temperature and place them in a 1.5cm of water in a tray to allow them to drink.

Prawns

Most of us collect live prawns when fishing for rays. Prawns can be difficult to keep for any long length of time. Using a Salt Bucket again is the way to keep them. On a hot day they would last an hour or two with ice packs placed inside the bucket. If you have an air pump in there aswell they will last a full day. The key is to keep changing the water every 2 hours and keep cool as the water clouds with their own “bodily functions” and this can kill them very quickly.

Ragworm/Lugworm

Favourite amongst anglers! Best kept in a tray with 1/4″ of seawater. Place in a bait fridge. If they are healthy they will wriggle like mad when put in the water. Need to change the water every day or two with fresh collected saltwater. For just a few days dampen some newspaper with collected saltwater and wrap up the worms in 5’s or 10’s and keep in the fridge until ready to use. Another good way is to get some Vermiculite you can get a bag load of it from a local garden centre. Put the worms in a sealed Rag and Lug Tub with air holes and a small handful of Vermiculite. Spray the worms with saltwater just to keep damp not soaking and place in the fridge. It is important to remove any dead worms if any daily as this will kill all of your worms due to toxins leaching out from the decomposing worm.

Sea Fishing Tackle – Hook Sizes Explained

Hooks are hooks in most anglers’ minds. They figure they either need a big one or a small one, depending on the fish they are pursuing. Lots of anglers go through life completely missing the importance of using not only the right size sea hook, but probably most importantly the right type of sea hook.

It’s not just pure fishing luck that makes the difference in all sea anglers catching more than you. Most of the time it’s the hook choice you make on the day. A thick forged hook is not the right choice for small fish, fish with small mouths or soft lipped fish. A thin Aberdeen wire hook that can penetrate quickly in the inside of the mouth would be a better choice however you would also need a hook that holds its strength and shape.

Hook size is probably the first thing a sea angler should think of when buying hooks. Most are smart enough to know which hook is the right size for the fish they are after but it takes experience. Sizes from most manufacturers range from the very smallest freshwater trout hook at a number 32, to the very largest game fish hook at 19/0.

The size breakdown from smallest to largest looks like this:32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 11, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0, 6/0, 7/0, 8/0, 9/0, 10/0, 11/0, 12/0, 13/0, 14/0, 15/0, 16/0, 17/0, 18/0, and 19/0.

In sea fishing in the UK, average range is from a Size 1 to a Size 10/0 been a boat hook. For example Mackerel fishing, you should be using a size 1/0 hook, for Pollack from the shore you could use a size 3/0 or 4/0 and also you can use this size for most bottom fishing needs. Flatfish you are better off using a size 1 or 1/0 due to their small mouths. Remember all of these hooks come in a short, regular, or long shank version. The shank of the hook is the part between the eye of the hook and the bend. For example long shanks are very well suited for Sandeel baits, Lug or Rag threaded up the shank for a more natural presentation.

Fish hooks also come in several types. Knowing a few of the more popular ones and their uses can help you be successful:

O’SHAUGHNESSYThis hook is named for the specific design of the hook. It’s a standard hook, forged with a very strong bend. This hook is relatively thick, very strong, and not likely to bend out of shape. Generally designed for saltwater, it is good for general bottom fishing use. Sizes range from #3 to as large as 19/0.

ABERDEENThey are generally made from shaped wire. Unlike the O’Shaughnessy, it can and does bend. It can be bent back into shape several times before it becomes too weak. However, once a fish is hook and the barb has completely penetrated, this hook holds very well. These hooks are modified with bends in their shanks for use in jig molds.

CIRCLEPerhaps the best innovation in hooks to come along, circle hooks promote healthy catch and release. The design of the hook itself, when used properly, prevents fish from being hooked in the gut. Many sea anglers have a problem using these hooks because they require no hook set. If you do try to set the hook, it will generally come out of the mouth of the fish. These hooks are designed to move to the corner of the fish’s mouth and set themselves as the fish swims away from you. Anglers feel a bite and simply begin reeling, slowly at first, then faster as the hook gets set.

LIVE BAITThese hooks generally have a shorter shank than other hooks. Whether that is to allow the live bait to swim more freely or to be less apparent to the fish is debatable. My vote is to allow the bait to swim more freely. These hooks come in regular and circle designs. Regular live bait hooks will be swallowed and result in gut hooks most of the time. Circle live bait hooks provide a greater chance for a good release.

BAITHOLDERBaitholder Hooks – These are very widely used by sea anglers. These are good hooks for worm bait they have a ringed eye and have 2 slices or barbs in the shank to assist with holding the bait up the shank of the hook.

KAHLEThe curve on these hooks makes them ideal for live bait. Made from the same wire as the Aberdeen hooks, they will bend if hung on the bottom of some structure. However, once a fish is hooked, the design of the hook prevents it from being straightened.Hook Choice!

First, use common sense. As simple as that may sound, I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen people make some really bad hook choices. Match the hook size with the fish!Second, use some trial and error and learn from your mistakes. No one became a good fisherman overnight. All of us had to learn either from someone else or by trial and error.Thirdly, get a good brand of hook, such as Sakuma or Mustad. Try to avoid cheap hooks for the reason that they are just not up for the job, you don’t want to let that fish of a life time get away because of a crap hook bend out on you! If you are going to spend any money on Terminal tackle you hooks should be the number one first choice.

My personal favourites are Sakuma Singers and Mustad Worm hooks for flatfish and Mustad Aberdeen and Ultra Point Bass Hooks for Bottom Fishing for Huss off the rocks where a stronger hook is needed but a larger gape for bigger baits is required.

Finally, to all of you who are new to fishing, try taking these examples and build your learning experiences upon them. Trial and error are often the best teachers in any skill.

The Fish in the Three Religions

Before dealing with the topic of the Fish in Quran versus Bible versus sciences, it is mandatory to remember that the total words in the Bible are 788,280 while the total words in the Quran are 77,473. It follows that, the Bible is more than 10 times the Quran word-wise. The Fish is mentioned 64 times in the Bible and six times in the Quran, i.e. the Bible mentions the Heap more than 10 times as does the Quran. In other words, the Bible has the potential of more than 10 times (word-wise) and more than 10 times (subject-wise) than the Quran to talk about the Fish.

The Fish in the Bible:

The Lord says: 1) “I dry up the sea, I turn rivers into a desert; their fish rot for lack of water and die of thirst”, 2) “I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread fishnets. You will never be rebuilt,” 3) “I will put hooks in your jaws and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales. I will pull you out from among your streams, with all the fish sticking to your scales”, 4) “I will leave you in the desert, you and all the fish of your streams. You will fall on the open field and not be gathered or picked up. When Moses met his Teacher:

18:61-66

[61] But when they reached the Junction, they forgot (about) their Fish, which took its course through the sea (straight) as in a tunnel.

[62] When they had passed on (some distance), Moses said to his attendant: “Bring us our early meal; truly we have suffered much fatigue at this (stage of) our journey.”

[63] He replied: “Sawest thou (what happened) when we betook ourselves to the rock? I did indeed forget (about) the Fish; none but Satan made me forget to tell (you) about it: it took its course through the sea in a marvellous way!”

[64] Moses said: “That was what we were seeking after:” so they went back on their footsteps, following (the path they had come).

[65] So they found one of Our servants, on whom We had bestowed mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our own Presence.

[66] Moses said to him: “May I follow thee, on the footing that thou teach me something of the (Higher) Truth which thou hast been taught?”

The Israelites and the trial of the Fish

Surah 7: 163

Ask them concerning the town standing close by the sea. Behold! they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. For on the day of their Sabbath their fish did come to them, openly holding up their heads, but on the day they had no Sabbath, they came not: thus did We make a trial of them, for they were given to transgression.

Surah 5:96, 97

[96] Made lawful to you is the fished of the sea and its use for food, for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel; but forbidden is the pursuit of land-game, as long as ye are in the Sacred Precincts or in pilgrim garb. And fear Allah, to Whom ye shall be gathered back.

[97] Allah made the “kaaba”, the Sacred House, an asylum of security for men, as also the Sacred Months, the animals for offerings, and the garlands that mark them: that ye may know that Allah hath knowledge of what is in the heavens and on earth and that Allah is well-acquainted with all things.

The Benefits of the Sea:

Fish to eat, ornaments to wear and ships for travels and transportation

Surah 16:14

It is He Who has made the sea subject, that ye may eat thereof flesh that is fresh and tender, and that ye may extract therefrom ornaments to wear, and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the bounty of Allah and that ye may be grateful.

Surah 35:12

Nor are the two bodies of flowing water alike, the one palatable, sweet, and pleasant to drink, and the other, salt and bitter. Yet from each (kind of water) do ye eat flesh fresh and tender, and ye extract ornaments to wear; and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the Bounty of Allah that ye may be grateful.

Before dealing with the topic of the Fish in Quran versus Bible versus sciences, it is mandatory to remember that the total words in the Bible are 788,280 while the total words in the Quran are 77,473. It follows that, the Bible is more than 10 times the Quran word-wise. The Fish is mentioned 64 times in the Bible and six times in the Quran, i.e. the Bible mentions the Heap more than 10 times as does the Quran. In other words, the Bible has the potential of more than 10 times (word-wise) and more than 10 times (subject-wise) than the Quran to talk about the Fish.

Let the Fish of the Sea Inform you in Bible Versus Quran

Before dealing with the topic of the Fish in Quran versus Bible versus sciences, it is mandatory to remember that the total words in the Bible are 788,280 while the total words in the Quran are 77,473. It follows that, the Bible is more than 10 times the Quran word-wise. The Fish is mentioned 64 times in the Bible and six times in the Quran, i.e. the Bible mentions the Heap more than 10 times as does the Quran. In other words, the Bible has the potential of more than 10 times (word-wise) and more than 10 times (subject-wise) than the Quran to talk about the Fish.

The Fish in the Bible:

The Lord says: 1) “I dry up the sea, I turn rivers into a desert; their fish rot for lack of water and die of thirst”, 2) “I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread fishnets. You will never be rebuilt,” 3) “I will put hooks in your jaws and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales. I will pull you out from among your streams, with all the fish sticking to your scales”, 4) “I will leave you in the desert, you and all the fish of your streams. You will fall on the open field and not be gathered or picked up. I will give you as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the air” and 5) “I will sweep away both men and animals; I will sweep away the birds of the air and the fish of the sea”

Isaiah 50:2

By a mere rebuke I dry up the sea, I turn rivers into a desert; their fish rot for lack of water and die of thirst.

Ezekiel 26:5

Out in the sea she will become a place to spread fishnets, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD. She will become plunder for the nations,

Ezekiel 26:14

The Fish in the Quran:

When talking about the Fish, the Quran presents the following subjects:

1) When Moses met his Teacher

2) The Israelites and the trial of the Fish

3) Allah made lawful to you is the fished of the sea and its use for food

4) The Benefits of the Sea (Fish to eat, ornaments to wear and ships for travels and transportation)

When Moses met his Teacher:

18:61-66

[61] But when they reached the Junction, they forgot (about) their Fish, which took its course through the sea (straight) as in a tunnel.

[62] When they had passed on (some distance), Moses said to his attendant: “Bring us our early meal; truly we have suffered much fatigue at this (stage of) our journey.”

[63] He replied: “Sawest thou (what happened) when we betook ourselves to the rock? I did indeed forget (about) the Fish; none but Satan made me forget to tell (you) about it: it took its course through the sea in a marvellous way!”

[64] Moses said: “That was what we were seeking after:” so they went back on their footsteps, following (the path they had come).

[65] So they found one of Our servants, on whom We had bestowed mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our own Presence.

[66] Moses said to him: “May I follow thee, on the footing that thou teach me something of the (Higher) Truth which thou hast been taught?”

The Israelites and the trial of the Fish

Surah 7: 163

Ask them concerning the town standing close by the sea. Behold! they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. For on the day of their Sabbath their fish did come to them, openly holding up their heads, but on the day they had no Sabbath, they came not: thus did We make a trial of them, for they were given to transgression.

Surah 5:96, 97

[96] Made lawful to you is the fished of the sea and its use for food, for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel; but forbidden is the pursuit of land-game, as long as ye are in the Sacred Precincts or in pilgrim garb. And fear Allah, to Whom ye shall be gathered back.

[97] Allah made the “kaaba”, the Sacred House, an asylum of security for men, as also the Sacred Months, the animals for offerings, and the garlands that mark them: that ye may know that Allah hath knowledge of what is in the heavens and on earth and that Allah is well-acquainted with all things.

The Benefits of the Sea:

Fish to eat, ornaments to wear and ships for travels and transportation

Surah 16:14

It is He Who has made the sea subject, that ye may eat thereof flesh that is fresh and tender, and that ye may extract therefrom ornaments to wear, and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the bounty of Allah and that ye may be grateful.

Surah 35:12

Nor are the two bodies of flowing water alike, the one palatable, sweet, and pleasant to drink, and the other, salt and bitter. Yet from each (kind of water) do ye eat flesh fresh and tender, and ye extract ornaments to wear; and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the Bounty of Allah that ye may be grateful.
